The Mets’ matchup against the Miami Marlins on Monday night in Port St. Lucie promises an exciting moment that fans have eagerly awaited for almost a year: Edwin Diaz’s return to pitching in a major league game.
Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed on Sunday morning that Diaz will make his spring debut during Monday night’s game, following starting pitcher Tylor Megill. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m. on SNY.
Having participated in live BP sessions and minor league intrasquad games thus far, Diaz will be restricted to a 20-pitch limit.
In an intrasquad game last Tuesday, Diaz delivered a flawless inning, including striking out top prospect Jett Williams. Diaz expressed feeling “100 percent ready” after that outing and continued his preparation with another live BP session on Friday.
“I just feel like I need competition. I’m ready,” Diaz stated on Tuesday. “I’m throwing my pitches like I want to. I feel 100 percent ready, so I need games, I told them.”
Diaz’s knee injury during last year’s World Baseball Classic significantly affected the Mets’ season. Now, as he returns to action, he aims to regain his dominant form showcased in 2022, where he posted a 1.31 ERA with 17.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
