According to ESPN’s Khris Rhim, the Los Angeles Chargers are considering retaining free agent cornerback Michael Davis for the upcoming season, provided the terms are favorable. In 2022, Davis and the team experienced a significant improvement, reaching the postseason with a 10-7 record. However, in the subsequent season, alongside many teammates and the team’s overall 5-12 finish, Davis witnessed a decline in performance. Rhim notes that after a standout 2022, Davis struggled in 2023, facing periods of being in and out of the lineup and even being benched for multiple weeks.
Pro Football Reference statistics reveal career-worst numbers, including 13.8 yards per completion, 8 touchdowns allowed, and a 65.2% completion rate when targeted. Due to Davis’s subpar performance in 2023, the Chargers may seek to negotiate a team-friendly contract, hoping he can return to his 2022 form when he boasted a 48.6% completion rate on targets, 9.9 yards per completion, and only 2 touchdowns allowed. Despite recently completing a three-year, $25 million deal, there’s potential for Davis and the team to reach a new agreement given the less-than-stellar performance in 2023.
