The Chicago Cubs have reached an agreement with first baseman Garrett Cooper on a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to join the team’s big league camp for spring training.
The deal was announced by the Cubs on Saturday.
At 33 years old, Cooper split his time between Miami and San Diego last season, where he posted a batting average of .251 alongside 17 home runs and 61 RBIs across 123 games. He was traded to the Padres on August 1st.
Originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 amateur draft from Auburn University, Cooper made his Major League debut with the New York Yankees back in 2017. Additionally, he has experience playing both right and left field at the Major League level.
Throughout his career spanning 481 games, Cooper holds a batting average of .268 with 56 home runs and 222 RBIs. He notably earned an NL All-Star selection in 2022.
