Following a season marked by a persistent need for a nickel back in 2023, the 49ers are poised to address this position in the upcoming NFL Draft. Their focus is on securing a player capable of covering the slot, and they have expressed interest in Kentucky defensive back Dru Phillips. Phillips revealed that he had a formal interview with the 49ers at the NFL Scouting Combine, as reported by NBC Sports Bay Area on Thursday.
Phillips, who showcased his skills at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, is anticipated to be a potential third- or fourth-round draft pick. According to NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, Phillips is expected to secure a starting role as a nickel back in his rookie season. Phillips himself sees the nickel back position as a natural fit for his skillset and mindset.
Having started the previous season with Isaiah Oliver as the nickel back, the 49ers made adjustments after a three-game losing streak. Starting cornerback Deommodore Lenoir moved inside to cover the slot receiver during passing situations, while Ambry Thomas took over at cornerback. In the Super Bowl, the 49ers opted for veteran Logan Ryan at nickel back due to Thomas’ struggles.
Phillips is among the defensive backs the 49ers met with during the week. These face-to-face meetings are conducted by the 49ers’ personnel department, with coaches participating through video calls from the Bay Area. Phillips described the meeting as positive, expressing admiration for the coaches, the team’s scheme, and their aspirations to elevate their success to the next level by assembling the right pieces.
