Chargers Secure a Deal with Ex-Michigan Director of Strength and Conditioning

Newly appointed Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz have been actively engaged in assembling their coaching and training staff for the upcoming 2024 season. In addition to recruiting a team of coaches, they have successfully secured the services of Michigan director of strength and conditioning, Ben Herbert, a move that was hinted at during Harbaugh’s introductory press conference and has now been officially confirmed.

Harbaugh, akin to his recruitment of Jesse Minter, has extended his Michigan connections to include Ben Herbert in building the Chargers’ team. J.J. Watt, a former NFL player and current analyst, emphasized the significance of Herbert’s appointment during an appearance on the Pat McAfee show. Watt highlighted, “One of the underrated things about that move that I think is going to play a big role that people might never even hear about or know about but will play a massive role if they are going to be successful in Los Angeles and that is the hiring of Ben Herbert as their strength coach.” Clearly, Herbert’s expertise in optimizing player fitness is held in high regard.

The Chargers have further fortified their strength and conditioning team with key additions, including Jonathan Brooks and Devin Woodhouse as head strength and conditioning coaches, Ben Rabe as the director of performance analytics, and Lincoln DeWolf as a performance analyst. Harbaugh is not only focused on instilling a robust team culture but is also mindful of the importance of a skilled and effective strength and conditioning staff in injury prevention.

The comprehensive approach to staff recruitment underscores the Chargers’ commitment to not only strategic coaching but also the physical well-being and preparedness of their players as they gear up for the challenges of the upcoming season.
