Notre Dame’s history with running backs has been marked by depth issues, often requiring players to switch positions to fill practice needs. However, those days seem distant now, as the backfield is brimming with talent, boasting six scholarship backs on campus this spring.
Deland McCullough, the running backs coach, faces a pleasant dilemma of managing ample talent rather than scarcity, as players vie to fill the void left by Audric Estime this season.
Returning Experience:
Four players from the 2023 season bring back a collective of 469 snaps. Devyn Ford, the lone upperclassman among them, accounted for 55 snaps. Jeremiah Love (147), Jadarian Price (107), and GiāBran Payne (160) each retain up to three years of eligibility.
Promising Production:
While losing a standout back like Estime is significant, the returning players have shown promising stats. Love (5.4), Price (5.8), and Ford (5.5) averaged over five yards per carry. Price, despite a smaller sample size, demonstrated impressive yards after contact, surpassing Estime in this aspect. Additionally, all four backs showcased receiving capabilities, with Love particularly standing out with eight missed tackles forced as a receiver.
Concerns with Payne:
Although Payne contributed in various aspects, some numbers reflect room for improvement, particularly in his role on third down. With a low yards per carry (3.7) and negative expected points added per rush, alongside minimal missed tackles forced, Payne faces competition to retain his position.
New Additions:
Notre Dame welcomes two early enrollees, Kedren Young and Aneyas Williams, both poised to make an impact. Young possesses versatility beyond power running, while Williams’s pass-catching skills resemble former Notre Dame back, Kyren Williams.
Spring Competition:
The competition intensifies this spring, with returning players vying for lead roles. While Ford is expected to remain a valuable contributor, the battle between Love and Price for prominence is pivotal. It’s anticipated that they will emerge as the primary duo, potentially challenging Payne’s role. The emergence of the freshmen could further shake up the hierarchy, depending on their talent and performance.
Ultimately, spring training will reveal who stands out among the contenders, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead for Notre Dame’s running backs.
