Steve Spagnuolo, a four-time Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator, secured three of those victories during his tenure with the Chiefs. While he will continue his role in Kansas City, he still harbors ambitions of becoming a head coach. The 2023 season, which was Spagnuolo’s contract year, witnessed his defense delivering its best performance, allowing under 25 points in 20 of the team’s 21 games—a new record. This accomplishment led to his contract extension after the Super Bowl. When asked about the possibility of returning to a head coaching position, Spagnuolo affirmed that it remains a goal for him.
During an interview on Mad Dog Sports Radio, Spagnuolo addressed the question, stating, “Absolutely would want to. We’re prideful guys in this business.” He reflected on his previous head coaching stint with the Rams, acknowledging challenges and near successes, expressing gratitude for his current position. While Spagnuolo has expressed interest in another head coaching opportunity, his recent contract with the Chiefs will delay that prospect. The future of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been a topic of speculation, but he will remain in his position for at least one more season.
While there is potential for Spagnuolo to be promoted as Reid’s successor, there is no definite timeline for such a transition. Currently, Spagnuolo and the Chiefs are focused on an offseason aimed at maintaining the team’s competitiveness for another title run.
