All-Star closer Liam Hendriks has finally found a new team after becoming a free agent. According to multiple reports, Hendriks has signed a two-year contract with the Boston Red Sox.
Hendriks, despite boasting an impressive career, hasn’t attracted much attention this offseason. This is largely due to his recent Tommy John surgery, which occurred last summer and will likely keep him out of action until the latter part of the 2024 MLB season. A more realistic expectation is for his return to be in the 2025 season.
The Red Sox seem willing to take a gamble on Hendriks where other teams have hesitated, banking on his potential to regain his previous form post-injury. If he manages to do so, they’ll have secured one of the league’s top closers at a relatively affordable price.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Hendriks’ contract with Boston guarantees him $10 million and includes additional performance-based bonuses.
Liam Hendriks began his MLB journey in 2011 with the Minnesota Twins before moving on to the Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, and the Chicago White Sox. With three All-Star appearances, two All-MLB First Team selections, and two AL Reliever of the Year awards, he has built an impressive resume over his 13-year career, amassing a record of 33-34, a 3.82 ERA, 727 strikeouts, and 116 saves.
