University of Alabama’s head football coach, Kalen DeBoer, announced on Monday the appointment of Kane Wommack as the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator.
Wommack, who will also take charge of coaching inside linebackers, joins Tuscaloosa after a successful stint as head coach at South Alabama over the past three years. With a record of 22-16 with the Jaguars, he led them to consecutive bowl games and clinched the 2023 Ventures 68 Bowl victory.
“Building a coaching staff is crucial to our success, and Kane Wommack is a vital addition to our goals at Alabama,” stated DeBoer. “His defensive expertise is widely respected in college football, and he will play a significant role in cultivating the winning culture necessary for our football program.”
Wommack brings extensive experience, having served as defensive coordinator at three different schools over six years. Beginning at Eastern Illinois in 2014-15, he subsequently held the same position at South Alabama from 2016-17 before joining Indiana, where he progressed from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator for the 2019-20 seasons.
“Having grown up in the SEC, the significance of football in Tuscaloosa is undeniable,” remarked Wommack. “Observing Alabama football from afar, I’ve always been impressed and inspired, longing to contribute to something truly remarkable. The standard set by Alabama is remarkable, and we’re eager to build upon that legacy. The opportunity to work with a friend like Kalen DeBoer, whom I know, trust, and admire, makes it even more special, and we’re thrilled to be in Tuscaloosa.”
During his tenure at South Alabama, Wommack led the program to its first-ever bowl victory in 2023, achieving back-to-back bowl appearances and a record-setting 10-win season in 2022. His innovative “Swarm Defense” strategy at Indiana garnered national recognition, with notable achievements in red zone defense and turnovers.
Before his coaching career, Wommack excelled as a collegiate athlete, contributing to successful seasons at Arkansas and Southern Mississippi. He holds a degree in political science from Southern Mississippi.
Wommack and his wife, Melissa, have three sons: Asher, Tatum, and Jones. His father, Dave Wommack, boasts over three decades of coaching experience, including a stint as defensive coordinator at Ole Miss.
While key stakeholders have been informed of the proposed appointment, financial details are subject to approval by the Board of Trustees.
