Thompson will miss the Panthers match due to controversy surrounding his Wigan teammate.

Wigan has encountered setbacks ahead of the World Club Challenge, with former Canterbury prop Luke Thompson ruled out due to concussion and involvement in a contentious incident involving halfback Harry Smith during their recent match against Castleford.

Thompson, who returned to British rugby league after four seasons with Belmore, sustained a head injury during the 32-4 victory over Castleford, resulting in his mandatory absence from the upcoming world title bout at DW Stadium.

Wigan coach Matty Peet expressed disappointment over Thompson’s absence, noting his strong performance earlier in the game and during preseason. However, he emphasized prioritizing player health above all else.

During the Castleford match, Smith was sin-binned in the 23rd minute, sparking controversy after Castleford coach Craig Lingard claimed that video referee Jack Smith had initially recommended a red card for the Wigan halfback. Lingard questioned the inconsistency in officiating decisions, particularly comparing Smith’s actions to those that led to one of Castleford’s players being sent off.

Although Smith received a yellow card following the recommendation, further repercussions may follow pending any judiciary action against him and lock Kaide Ellis for tackles during the match.

Peet remained focused on the upcoming challenge, stating that he had not thoroughly reviewed the incident involving Smith but accepted whatever consequences arose.

As preparations continue, the Panthers will hold a media event at their hotel on Monday, while Wigan will host the official pre-match media conference at Robin Park on Tuesday night.
