Navigating the Tight End Market: Which of These Three TEs Could Secure a Deal with the Broncos for the 2024 Season?

The Denver Broncos are anticipated to approach free agency cautiously in 2024, especially considering their significant spending in the previous year. With current cap constraints to address, it’s probable they will refrain from early free agency activity.

However, it’s prudent for Broncos enthusiasts to familiarize themselves with impending unrestricted free agents at various positions. Over the next few weeks, we will examine notable free agents position by position.

In this segment, the focus is on tight ends, a position where the Broncos might seek enhancement.

Top three prospects: Hunter Henry, Dalton Schultz, Noah Fant

Henry, approaching 30, had a somewhat subdued performance in 2023. While not in decline, he’s not a transformative player.

Schultz, on a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, performed decently, though the Texans may prioritize retaining him. Fant, despite high expectations, had a lackluster 2023 season without a touchdown.

These top three options don’t represent game-changers. Schultz might offer an improvement, but retaining him could be a priority for the Texans.

Overall, this year’s free agent pool for tight ends lacks significant talent. Players like Everett, Hooper, Geisicki, and Trautman have shown glimpses of promise but haven’t consistently excelled.

Everett, with seven years in the league, hasn’t exceeded four touchdowns in a single season. Hooper’s standout years were in 2018 and 2019 with the Falcons. Geisicki was disappointed with the Patriots in 2023 and may settle for another short-term deal. Trautman, though decent, wasn’t exceptional during his time with the Broncos.

While Trautman might return on a one-year deal, the Broncos might explore other options. However, it’s unlikely they’ll find a long-term solution in this pool.

While not disregarding veteran tight ends entirely, the Broncos shouldn’t overemphasize this position in free agency. The available choices aren’t likely to make an immediate impact.
