Coach Kevin Walters has successfully extended the contract of the Broncos’ key star

The Brisbane Broncos are determined to retain emerging talent Reece Walsh and have initiated discussions regarding a contract extension.

The young fullback, poised to make his season debut in the NRL Pre-season Challenge trial against the Cowboys, is currently without a contract beyond 2025. The Broncos are eager to secure his long-term commitment and are adamantly opposed to him hitting the free-agent market.

Despite rumors of several Sydney clubs offering up to $1.3 million per season for Walsh’s services, the Broncos are prepared to present a club-record deal of $1.1 million. They hope Walsh, recognizing the potential for a Brisbane premiership, will opt to stay. Coach Kevin Walters affirmed their determination to retain Walsh, emphasizing their investment in him.

Walters stressed the importance of retaining promising talents like Walsh as part of the Broncos’ strategy to build a championship-winning squad. Star prop Payne Haas, who recently signed a lucrative extension, has encouraged Walsh to prioritize loyalty over financial incentives.

Coming off a stellar 2023 season, where he played a pivotal role despite the team’s heartbreaking grand final loss, Walsh is expected to receive a substantial pay raise, potentially reaching 150%.

Having initially joined the Broncos from the Warriors on a three-year deal, Walsh’s exceptional performance has elevated him to the status of a potential $1 million fullback, making him a significant asset for the club.

Former Broncos captain Corey Parker believes Walsh warrants becoming the highest-paid player at the club due to his on-field prowess and off-field influence.

Despite Walsh’s undeniable talent and popularity, his ability to handle increased pressure and expectations will be tested. Last season, he faced controversy over an incident involving a referee, prompting him to seek support for emotional management.

Broncos’ CEO Dave Donaghy expressed confidence in Walsh’s ability to handle the spotlight, emphasizing his positive impact both on and off the field since his arrival.

As negotiations progress, the Broncos remain committed to fostering an environment conducive to Walsh’s development and success. Donaghy highlighted the importance of providing ongoing support to Walsh, ensuring his consistency on the field.

Furthermore, Walsh’s influence on aspiring young fullbacks is recognized, with Donaghy acknowledging his role in inspiring future generations within the sport.
