Falcons enthusiasts got their initial exposure to their freshly appointed coordinators and a reunion with a familiar figure.
Raheem Morris opted to keep Marquice Williams on board as the special teams’ coach, a remnant from Arthur Smith’s coaching staff. Alongside the newcomers, coordinators Zac Robinson and Jimmy Lake, Morris convened with the Atlanta media for introductory press sessions, delving into an array of subjects.
Discussions revolved around offensive and defensive strategies, with a particular focus on the pivotal task of addressing the quarterback position during the offseason.
As the regular season neared its end, uncertainties loomed over Arthur Smith’s future in Atlanta. However, there were no such doubts concerning Desmond Ridder. It was evident that the team needed to upgrade the quarterback spot before the 2024 season.
Ridder wasn’t the worst quarterback in the league, but his tendency to commit costly turnovers during crucial moments of games was undeniable. It was widely anticipated that the Falcons would explore quarterback options in the upcoming offseason. Arthur Blank even stated that every potential head coach acknowledged the need for improvement in that position.
Nonetheless, during his introductory press conference, Zac Robinson left some room for speculation regarding Ridder and Taylor Heinicke. When asked about their plans and criteria for the quarterback position, the new offensive coordinator expressed openness.
“Whether it’s a traditional pocket passer or someone more mobile, we’re simply searching for the best fit,” Robinson stated. “We’re evaluating everyone, including Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder. All possibilities are being considered.”
While this might seem like typical coach rhetoric, I don’t genuinely believe Heinicke or Ridder are viable starting options for the Falcons in 2024. Blank’s sentiments about the state of the quarterback position were crystal clear.
“It’s evident to everyone—our fans, the media, and the entire NFL—that we need to address this position for the betterment of our team in 2024 and beyond, whether through trades, free agency, or the draft,” Blank emphasized.
Though some fans may find it amusing that the new offensive coordinator implied an external solution for the quarterback dilemma right off the bat, Robinson’s response likely aimed at maintaining team cohesion and morale. However, I don’t think there’s much substance to it.
