The Los Angeles Chargers reveal new additions to their coaching staff.

After spending six seasons at the University of Notre Dame (2018-23), Chris O’Leary joins the Los Angeles Chargers as the safeties coach. Initially serving as a defensive analyst for two seasons, he transitioned to coaching Rovers in 2020 and eventually took on the role of defensive backs coach/safeties from 2021-23. In the latest season, O’Leary played a key role in developing safety Xavier Watts, a former wide receiver, who led the nation with seven interceptions and received the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the top defensive player in college football. O’Leary is recognized for his talent development, having coached eventual first-round selections Kyle Hamilton and Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to All-American status.

Dylan Roney, an emerging defensive coach, assumes the position of defensive assistant for the Los Angeles Chargers. Roney, previously a graduate assistant at the University of Michigan, played a crucial role in coaching edge rushers, including Aidan Hutchinson, a unanimous All-American and the second overall draft pick in 2021. Roney contributed to the top-ranked defensive unit in the country in 2023, which allowed just 17 touchdowns throughout the season and averaged 247.0 yards and 10.4 points allowed per game. With a playing background at Navy and Ferris State, Roney began his coaching career at Ferris State in 2018 before gaining experience at Western Kentucky and the University of Illinois.

With 36 years of coaching experience, including 26 in the NFL, Marc Trestman brings his expertise to the Los Angeles Chargers as a senior offensive assistant. Trestman, known for his offensive prowess, served as the head coach for the Chicago Bears from 2013-14, achieving the No. 2 ranking in scoring offense in his first season. His successful coaching career extends to the CFL, where he led the Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts to three Grey Cup Championships and earned two CFL Coach of the Year awards. Trestman’s recent NFL roles include offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, where he guided the offense to a top-ten ranking in passing offense.
