A longstanding member of the Detroit Lions’ front office departs for the Washington Commanders.

The Washington Commanders have brought in Lance Newmark from the Detroit Lions organization, where he served as the senior director of player personnel. While it’s uncertain if Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn were the top choices for the head coaching position, the Commanders have secured Newmark as their assistant general manager. This move reunites Newmark with former Lions’ general manager Martin Mayhew, who now holds the position of senior personnel executive for Washington, advising general manager Adam Peters.

Confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and acknowledged by the team, Newmark expressed his enthusiasm for joining the Washington Commanders in a statement. He cited his respect for Adam Peters and shared his belief in Peters’ vision for the franchise. Newmark also highlighted the commitment of team owner Josh Harris to building a championship-caliber football team, expressing gratitude for the opportunity.

In response to the departure of Lance Newmark from the Detroit Lions, potential successors for the role of senior director of player personnel include internal candidates such as Rob Lohman, the director of pro scouting, and Brian Hudspeth, the director of college scouting, according to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit.

Newmark had previously interviewed for the Lions’ general manager position before Brad Holmes was appointed in 2021. His contributions to the Lions included key roles in the draft and free agency, as well as integrating analytics into both college and pro scouting processes.
