The Minnesota Vikings made two updates to their defensive staff on Friday. Marcus Dixon will now serve as the defensive line coach, taking over from Chris Rumph, who recently joined Clemson University’s football staff after a couple of seasons with the Vikings. Rumph had also taken a leave of absence last season due to personal reasons, with assistant defensive line coach Patrick Hill assuming most responsibilities during that time. Dixon arrives at the Vikings after coaching the defensive line in Denver for two seasons.
In addition, assistant head coach Mike Pettine will now also handle coaching duties for outside linebackers. Pettine, who has been with the Vikings for the past two seasons, stepped in to assist with coaching outside linebackers last year when another staff member, Mike Smith, took a leave of absence before the season. While Smith is still listed on the Vikings website as an outside linebackers coach and pass rush specialist, Pettine’s updated title suggests potential changes in Smith’s role or departure from the team.
The remainder of the Vikings’ coaching staff remains unchanged.
