Yankees and other top MLB teams contend for 32-year-old star who had once played for the team

The 32-year-old’s 2023 campaign was curtailed by a fractured left pelvis sustained in June.

In his previous season, Urshela recorded a .285/.338/.429 batting line with 13 home runs and 27 doubles over 144 games while playing for the Minnesota Twins in 2022.

It seems likely that Urshela will end up with one of the New York teams, particularly given the spring preparations for the upcoming baseball season.

Given Brett Baty’s struggles and Mark Vientos’ role primarily as a pinch hitter, Urshela, should he be signed, could be considered for the regular third base position.

Meanwhile, the Yankees, having been acquainted with Urshela during his tenure in the Bronx from 2019 to 2021, have solidified their starting positions unless unforeseen injuries occur.

Several teams in need of outfield depth have expressed interest in signing Gio Urshela as a free agent.

During the offseason, Urshela garnered significant attention, with the Mets and Yankees frequently linked to him.

Will Sammon of The Athletic reported on Dec. 31 that both New York teams have shown interest.

The Yankees, like every other Major League Baseball team, are familiar with Urshela’s capabilities.

In his initial two seasons with the Yankees, he amassed a .310/.359/.523 batting line with 27 home runs and 104 RBI across 175 games.

Urshela was traded to the Minnesota Twins in March 2022 as part of the Josh Donaldson trade deal.

During his lone season with the Angels, Urshela recorded a .299/.324/.374 batting line in 214 at-bats.

The Mets and Marlins could consider adding Urshela as insurance in case their third basemen Brett Baty and Jake Burger struggle this season.

The Yankees might seek an insurance policy if either DJ LeMahieu or Anthony Volpe fails to meet expectations.
