Patriots decide to shock their key star with a new phase of career

According to several media reports on Saturday, the New England Patriots are set to elevate DeMarcus Covington, currently the defensive line coach, to the position of defensive coordinator.

This move marks the initial staff selection for the team’s new head coach, Jerod Mayo, who was recently promoted as an assistant to succeed the longtime head coach Bill Belichick. Covington, aged 34, joined the Patriots as an assistant in 2017 and progressed to the role of defensive line coach in 2020. It’s worth noting that in recent years, Bill Belichick had primarily handled the defensive play-calling duties, and the last person to hold the title of defensive coordinator was Matt Patricia in 2017.
