Vikings considering possible options for a new quarterback

If the Vikings opted not to extend Kirk Cousins’ contract this spring, they will likely be on the hunt for a bridge quarterback. This veteran player, while not a long-term solution, can effectively lead the team and connect with key players like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson. This holds true whether the Vikings decide to draft a quarterback early or not. In the scenario where they do draft a rookie, the veteran and the newcomer can compete for the starting position, providing the coaching staff with the flexibility to allow the rookie sometime before taking on the starting role. If the Vikings decide to delay drafting a quarterback until 2025, the bridge quarterback can serve as a temporary placeholder.

The benchmark for a bridge quarterback is Nick Mullens, who is under contract for one more year but demonstrated inconsistency with eight interceptions in his three late-season starts. In a post-Kirk Cousins era, the Vikings require someone capable of taking care of the football.

Here are potential bridge quarterback options for the Vikings in 2024:

1. **Baker Mayfield:**

After a stint with the Panthers and Rams in 2022, Mayfield had a resurgence in 2023 with the Buccaneers, leading them to the divisional round. With over 4,000 yards, 28 touchdowns, and ten picks, he became a finalist for the Comeback Player of the year award. Now a free agent, Mayfield may be interested in playing under Kevin O’Connell and throwing to the Vikings’ offensive weapons.

2. **Russell Wilson:**
While not a free agent, Wilson might part ways with the Broncos and potentially released by the team. Depending on contract considerations, he could be an intriguing bridge option for teams in need, although landing in Minnesota seems unlikely.

3. **Jacoby Brissett:**
Brissett, with 48 career starts, strikes a balance between a backup and a clear-cut starter. He showed effectiveness in a small sample in 2023 while filling in for Sam Howell, making him a suitable candidate for the bridge role.

4. **Ryan Tannehill:**
Turning 36 in the summer, Tannehill faced some challenges in the previous season but brings extensive experience from 156 career starts. A rejuvenation in Minnesota, playing with Jefferson, Hockenson, and Addison, could be contingent on the price tag.

5. **Sam Howell:**
While not a free agent, Howell might become available via trade if Washington selects a quarterback with the second overall pick. Despite a challenging season, he still possesses upside, and the Vikings could consider trading a draft pick for a young quarterback on a rookie contract.

Other potential options in free agency include Gardner Minshew, Jameis Winston, Tyrod Taylor, Mason Rudolph, and Sam Darnold. The Vikings have several avenues to explore in their quest for a bridge quarterback for the upcoming season.
